Spotlight on Our Studies 10/13/19 to 10/18/19

Math
We will continue working with multiplying and dividing by the powers of ten. 

Learning Target: I can Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10.  I can use whole number exponents to denote powers of 10.

Reading. 
We will continue our novel study on Fish in a Tree.  We will continue the reading strategies Notice & Note this week during our reading.   We will focus on the Words of the Wiser and Again & Again strategies. We will also continue to practice using the UNWRAP strategies during our News For Kids Articles.  
Learning Target:  I can quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Language/Writing
We will visit the Writing Lab on Wednesday. Students have been working on composing a middle & ending to a narrative.  Students will continue their drafts and choose one of the ending stories to publish and turn in for a grade. 
Learning Target: I can write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

We will continue our study of commas this week.  We will be using Christmas in the Trenches as our mentor text.  It is a great story about the Christmas truce that took place during WWI. 
Learning Target:  I can use a comma to set off the words yes and no, to set off a tag question from the rest of the sentence, and to indicate direct address. 
There will be a quiz on this learning target on Thursday. 

Spelling-Students should be working on Lesson 6 this week. At least 4 online spelling activities should be completed by Tuesday, Oct. 15th.  Spelling Test will be Tuesday, October 15th.

Social Studies
We will continue to focus on WWI, the causes and results of the war.
Learning Target: I can explain how German attacks on U.S. shipping during the war in Europe (1914-1917) ultimately led the U.S. to join the fight against Germany; include the sinking of the Lusitania and concerns over safety of U.S. ships, U.S. contributions to the war, and the impact of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

The Social Studies Unit test is scheduled for Thursday, August 27th. Focus on our studies Nov. 11th

Reading: We will be starting our book clubs this week.  Students will be reading this book along with their independent reading book. We   will also begin to focus on identifying common themes in fictional text. Students will work with common themes by reading passages and using the plot to determine the theme. We will also continue to work on Reading Comprehension skills with closed reading passages about Veterans Day, Matter, and other topics of study.    Learning Target: I can determine a theme of a story from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.  Language Arts:  In writing we will begin our informational text pieces. W e will begin by selecting our topic and begin the research process. We will use online resources along with books and magazines from our library.  Learning Target: I can write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas
