Focus on our studies Nov. 11th

Reading:
We will be starting our book clubs this week.  Students will be reading this book along with their independent reading book. We  will also begin to focus on identifying common themes in fictional text. Students will work with common themes by reading passages and using the plot to determine the theme. We will also continue to work on Reading Comprehension skills with closed reading passages about Veterans Day, Matter, and other topics of study.  
 Learning Target: I can determine a theme of a story from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text. 

Language Arts: 

In writing we will begin our informational text pieces. We will begin by selecting our topic and begin the research process. We will use online resources along with books and magazines from our library.  Learning Target: I can write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.   LAD this week will focus on the following skills- editing sentences, correlative conjunctions, figurative language, words that signal additional/similar, reference sources, commas, cause and effect. We'll also continue to practice complex and compound sentences.  LAD Quiz will be on Friday. Spelling List 10 Activities and test will be on Tuesday.  


Math:
Multiplying decimals using the model and algorithm test will be on Tuesday, November 12th.  We will then begin to divide decimals using the concrete model & algorithm.  Learning Target: I can divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations,  relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Science:
Matter Unit test is scheduled for Thursday, November 14th.  Lots of Study/Review material is on Edmodo in the Science folder.  

Social Studies:  

After the Science test we will begin the new Social Studies unit on Roaring 20s.  All review & study material will be in the Social Studies folder on Edmodo.
 Learning Targets: 
  • I can describe how the American involvement in WWI lead to the Roaring 20s.  
  • can describe the cultural developments and individual contributions in the 1920s of the Jazz Age (Louis Armstrong), the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes), baseball (Babe Ruth), the automobile (Henry Ford), and transatlantic flight (Charles Lindbergh).  
  • I can describe how specialization can improve standards of living and productivity (e.g. how Henry Ford’s use of the assembly line reduced the price of automobiles). 
  • I can describe how entrepreneurs take risks to develop new goods and services to start a business.

Spotlight on our studies week of 8/5/2019-8/9/2019

We are having a great first full week in fifth grade! We are getting into the routine and learning more about fifth grade expectations.  Math:  We began multiplying whole numbers this week using various strategies.  The most common ones are:  Box Multiplication or Window Pane, Lattice and Turtle Head (Traditional Algorithm).  See the videos below for support.  Language Arts:    Language Arts Daily (LAD) this week will focus on the following concepts: editing sentences, dictionary usage, context clues, identifying words that signal contrast, chronological order of events, and rewriting sentences. Weekly Update August 26-30

Reminders: Please, please, please be sure your student is reading at least 10 pages in their independent reading book each night! It is so beneficial and will help tremendously in their reading comprehension.
