Classroom Information

Reading: Reading Benchmark Assessments will continue this week.  We will continue our Novel Study on Fish in a Tree, focusing on characterization and connections.  We will also continue looking figurative language.  

Language/Writing: LAD this week will focus on the following concepts: editing sentences, dictionary usage, context clues, identifying words that signals contrast, chronological order of events, and rewriting sentences. We will visit the writing lab on Tuesdays & Thursdays.   We began brainstorming today, which is the first step in the writing process. The first writing unit is on Narrative Writing. 

Spelling: Students were given a spelling assessment yesterday to determine differentiated spelling groups.  Spelling will begin next week. 

Math: Multiplication of whole numbers test on Thursday, August 15, 2019. We will begin learning strategies for dividing multi digit whole numbers on Friday. 
Social Studies:  We will continue learning about Cattle Trails and Immigration (late 1800s - early 1900s).
Important Dates & Reminders
• Picture Day is tomorrow – please look in your child’s blue folder for the picture envelope. Return the envelope tomorrow if you are interested in purchasing pictures. Every child will have their picture made, even if you don't purchase a picture package. 
•Fifth grade t-shirt orders are due by August 23
•If you haven’t returned the papers from Open House, please send them in ASAP.
•August 28 – Early Release Day at 12:30
•IOWA Testing – Sept. 9 – 12

Spotlight on our studies week of 8/5/2019-8/9/2019

We are having a great first full week in fifth grade! We are getting into the routine and learning more about fifth grade expectations.  Math:  We began multiplying whole numbers this week using various strategies.  The most common ones are:  Box Multiplication or Window Pane, Lattice and Turtle Head (Traditional Algorithm).  See the videos below for support.  Language Arts:    Language Arts Daily (LAD) this week will focus on the following concepts: editing sentences, dictionary usage, context clues, identifying words that signal contrast, chronological order of events, and rewriting sentences. Reminders: Please, please, please be sure your student is reading at least 10 pages in their independent reading book each night! It is so beneficial and will help tremendously in their reading comprehension.
