Weekly Update August 26-30

Reminders:

  • Please, please, please be sure your student is reading at least 10 pages in their independent reading book each night! It is so beneficial and will help tremendously in their reading comprehension.
  • Tuesday, August 27th- Division Quiz & Spelling Test  
  • Wednesday, August 28th- Early Release 12:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 29th- Social Studies Test, Mrs. Stevens Visit
  • Friday, August 30th- Daily Language Quiz, Math Problem Solving Quiz, & Miller Money Store Open 
  • Monday, September 2nd- No School 
  • September 9th-12th- IOWA Testing
  • September 23rd-27th-Fall Break
Curriculum Update
  • ELA/Reading-We will continue our novel study on Fish in a Tree.  Students will continue to use the UNWRAP strategy in reading passages.  We will  learn the comma rule for greetings & closings in a letter, and the comma rule for addresses.  We will continue working on our personal narrative drafts.  This week we will focus on writing a strong conclusion, adding sensory details, transition words, and dialogue. Spelling Test will be on Tuesday, August 27th. 
  • Social Studies- We will continue our study of how life has changed at the turn of the century. We will finish our Ellis Island Webquest, complete and online Immigration Simulation, and learn about the big business boom.  Our unit test will be on Thursday, August 29th.  
  • Math- We will review Division strategies and take our Division Quiz on Tuesday, August 27th.  We will then begin our study of the Place Value System.

Focus on our studies Nov. 11th

Reading: We will be starting our book clubs this week.  Students will be reading this book along with their independent reading book. We   will also begin to focus on identifying common themes in fictional text. Students will work with common themes by reading passages and using the plot to determine the theme. We will also continue to work on Reading Comprehension skills with closed reading passages about Veterans Day, Matter, and other topics of study.    Learning Target: I can determine a theme of a story from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.  Language Arts:  In writing we will begin our informational text pieces. W e will begin by selecting our topic and begin the research process. Social Studies Westward Expansion Review

The Social Studies Unit test is scheduled for Thursday, August 27th.
